A Gift

Image

I have a kindle that I love.  The slim electronic that can hold hundreds and hundreds of stories that can transport you to any time and any place. BUT every now and then I love a good solid book. Touch it, feel it, smell it, see it book. I wish the screen was scratch and sniff for everyone to enjoy the smell of a new book or old book for that matter. Books are lovely. Many years ago my mama, aunt, and grandmother instilled in me a love of reading. Honestly, I don’t know how they were able to ingrain this into all of the children on my mom’s side but we all love to read. I wish I knew the magic formula to teach people to love to read. (I’d teach the lovely Mr.) I do not know. My best guess is they read to us and we watched them all sit in the same room together yet absorbed by books at some point every time they were together. (As a side note all three of them and I pick our toenails subconsciously while we read. Gross I know but yet it fascinates me that we all do it.)  All of the cousin twins can manage to stay up past our bedtime engrossed in a good book. We crave them. We devour them. Occasionally, we try to savor them but often get too caught up in the story line and read it quickly.  Even Kyle and Will have been known to read which is unusual for men. So to Mama, Aunt Amy, and Grammie THANK YOU for one of the greatest lessons and gifts you gave me, a love of reading. A gift that enlightens, transports, serves as an escape, educates, reduces boredom and passes time-sometimes faster than we would like. Thanks for giving me a love for real books and electronic books anyway I can take them I will. It’s truly a beautiful thing.

Zoo

20130501-174137.jpg
This week Ryan and I took a break from unpacking and went to the zoo with this sweet baby. We also bought wands for her princess party. She just couldn’t quite understand why we had to save them!

20130501-174327.jpg
I think this is the first time in our zoo adventures that we saw this big guy.

Mine and ems favorite animal of course! Don’t tell nana!
I can’t wait til later this week when the work days are done. Alyssa will be home! Will will attend his senior prom and Claire will graduate from Alabama. What a year (or part of a quickly disappearing one) we have ahead of us!

Too much December fun!

Wow! What month! And how blessed are we!

20130110-092151.jpg
December and continuing on into January was a month full of family and love! AtJust the way it should be! Jane, Em and I started the month off at zoo light safari.
Em had a blast playing in the “snow”!
Candace and her lovely assistance took some beautiful engagement picture for me and Ryan. Ryan was a wonderful sport through the afternoon process!

I love the cobblestone in this picture. I can’t wait to see the rest!
After that weekend, Emilee and I went home then to Fairhope with Claire, Grnny, Cthy, and the boys.

Em even let all the boys hold her!
After that fun it was time to go home so I could put in a few days at work before the real Christmas fun began!

Cruise 2012

Ryan and I had a blast on my first cruise! Our trip was old news to Ryan as it was his eleventh or so cruise! We had three days at sea because Hurricane Sandy our stop in Princess Cay was cancelled. It was nice to have an extra sea day to relax and enjoy the boat. We enjoyed the thermal spa on board Ruby Princess. The gentle sauna with the heated tile seats felt heavenly. Monday and Tuesday we relaxed around the boat. Reading by the pool, walking around the deck 7 track, spending the evening in the thermal suite, attending the comedian shows, taking siestas and of course eating!

Chocolate pastries and fresh pineapple were some of my favorites.

20121107-065228.jpg
Another meal on the cruise was a fruit paradise. Mango lassi, chilled tropical fruit soup and a fruit tart made for a delicious festive meal!

Our first stop was St. Maarten. We rented a Jeep with another couple and drove around the entire island, snorkeled in three locations, found a French bakery and shopped in the downtown Philipsburg area. Whew!

Our first snorkeling stop Orient Bay. Here the water was a bit cloudy so we played in the water a bit.

The second snorkeling stop Coralita beach included many star fish and sea urchins.

20121107-072031.jpg
We also walked across an inlet to a national preserve. A little island made of rock and coral. Someone had created an alter from coral at the top. We also stumbled upon a geocache international style!

20121107-072137.jpg
Our third stop was Dawn Beach. Here was we were able to see some fish while dodging the jellies!

20121107-072333.jpg
Finally, we returned to town to enjoy the shopping, culture and an ice cold coke! Downtown with the ship in the background.

Our second stop was St. Thomas. This was my favorite of our destinations. Here we walked from port to Charlotte Amalie. First we grabbed a drink at a local deli and got the locals opinion on was to do. Next we set off on a walking tour.

We also climbed the 99 steps (actually 103 steps) for the tour of Blackbeard’s tower, the rum factory, the first house with the kitchen inside the house, and the amber museum.

Next we did a little shopping downtown. Then we took a cab to coral world. They had a shark tank, sting ray tank, turtle pools, reef tank, and an under water building to view the reef in the ocean.

Finally we returned to the cruise ship after a very busy day!

Our third and final stop was Grand Turk. Here we visited the lighthouse, attempted to snorkel, then walked through town and back to the cruise ship.

The Grand Turk lighthouse. Apparently the people on the island used to dim the light so that the ships would wreck. They then offered to help rescue the ships for money or plunder them.

I found a real conch shell on the beach! Sadly due to the rules we couldn’t take it home.

That evening we set sail for Ft. Lauderdale. Saturday was our final sea day. Again we did more of the same relaxing.

On Thursday we had a wonderful surprise from Ryan’s parents!

Saturday night we watched the Kansas State game in order to catch Alabama/LSU updates as it wasn’t on TV. Talk about a heart attack! Roll Tide!

Needless to say, we had a great time. I think Alaska might be our next trip!

Hot, hot, hot…

Fact: it’s hot. Too hot to do laundry for fear the dryer will make the house even hotter. Too hot to cook. Too hot to do anything but not move much. It’s currently 81 degrees in the house with the air on!
Another fact: my wonderful family and I spent yesterday moving… It was 105 yesterday. Man they must love me is all I have to say! Not only did we move but we cleaned the entire house squeaky clean in hopes of getting our deposit back. I would be (and kinda am) excited that it is complete!!!!! Except…we had to move ours of the house into a storage unit because the apartment we wanted wont be ready til mid July.

20120701-153801.jpg
Now we could have chosen the easy subpar apartment to move into but where is the fun in that! Besides its last year for Alyssa and I to fulfill our childhood dream of living together while she is in med school. We have to make this year rock and the only way to do that is a rocking apartment. Many thanks to uncle David, aunt Amy, Ian and Ryan! We started around 0615 and finished moving at 1049! Also many thanks Jessica for helping get the house clean. And mama, will and Claire who helped with pre-move preparations and my patriotic toe nails!

20120701-154253.jpg
Needless to say after making it through yesterday moving any part of my body seems like a huge task but alas laundry does have to be done and we do have to eat. But maybe not until the sun sets tonight!

June

Well it’s been a busy happy month! I took Em to the doctor for her two year checkup. They had to draw blood and give her a shot! We started the day at McDonald’s were she ate ketchup out of the paper cup! After a nap we went to the zoo and rode the train to improve our booboos.

20120619-162924.jpg
The first week of June we went to hunting island! What a glorious week! Can I go back now please!?! We had shrimp in some form everyday. Climbed the lighthouse. Had chocolate tree. Flew a sea turtle kite which the wind broke!! Took naps and cute pictures. And had an all around perfect HI time!

20120619-163408.jpg
Josh and Katie got married at the end of the week. It was a beautiful venue.
My lovely plants are looking great on the back deck! 19 green tomatoes and one red one at last count! Also have baby raspberries!

20120619-163645.jpg
Ryan has been studying for his boards which he takes thursday and then again July 5. Prayers said and fingers crossed! Hopefully he will be fully licensed by mid July!
I have slowly begun packing for the move. I really should be getting to it but really I lack motivation! That’s all for now pretty excited about next month! A birthday then an anniversary month too!!!

Recap

So it’s been a busy past few weeks! We have…attended Kyle and Laura’s beautiful wedding, spent a relaxing weekend in Pensacola, spent a weekend moving with Ryan’s parents help, spent Easter with my family and now are back to work!
Here is a picture of the new happy family!

I love this picture! Nice Mother’s Day present!

Sadly, no more relaxing views such as this one. BUT I am no longer in a long distance relationship and so happy to have Ryan a few miles away!

20120410-141351.jpg

Claire, Ryan and I made some cute Easter treats this past week as well. Simply make rice crispy treats, roll into balls, let the cool, then form nest shapes and add your choice of egg candy! Simple and cute!

Crafts

There are some pics of past craft projects. The first I made tutus for Emily and Ry’s niece. Simply sew a piece of inch wide elastic together. I cut the elastic to be right at or a half inch under their hip measurement so wouldn’t out grow them anytime soon. Next, determine desired length of tutu. Cut strips tulle doubling desired length. I layered two to three strips of tulle on top of each other before I knotted the tulle around the elastic. Here are my results….

I also made this heart wreath for Valentine’s day. Idea from pinterest.
