The Barefoot Mermaid’s Christmas Gift Ideas

I am no fashion or lifestyle blogger but here are a few of my picks for Christmas gift ideas.

The Birmingham Candy Company is hanging out at Santa’s workshop this year. You can grab corporate gifts or just a small treat for neighbors or friends. I recommend grabbing a peppermint bark or praline pecan candle for yourself. Ok they make great gifts too.

Gardenia Pillow by Adam Trest

Gardenia Pillow not going to lie I love this pillow but I thought it was a magnolia flower.

Artifact Uprising Gift Card I have been using the lay-flat album for my yearly and special trip photo books so a gift card would be lovely to use on the 2018 book as well as ever year but 2018 and Greece, that I need to go back and do.

Shade Rays I have a pair of these. You may have seen them in my Greece pictures. I would love this pink version too. After losing my Raybans at Disney I wont buy expensive glasses again.

Fuzzy, soft grey electric blanket I have one but its not as cuddly fuzzy soft. It is definitely time for an upgrade.

Digital Picture Frame because can you ever have too many photos displayed.

Rodin Mermaid Collection Luxury Body Oil

Mermaid Oil I have had and used this. It smells just like the ocean without tickling my nose like some ocean scented candles do.

Alabama Goods in downtown Homewood is great for local state made products.

My ultimate favorite gift, time. Dinner out together, a concert, a trip and event. Ryan and I are getting a Disney trip this year.

I also love picking up local gifts from the farmer’s market. Pepperplace has a few more Saturdays left. There’s candles, pottery, kombucha, cheese, soaps, honey, and other handmade items.

A few of my out of town family loves getting Jim N Nick’s Biscuit Mix. Or I think they do. Its great to have on hand for those holiday guest.

Beautycounter’s Best of Beautycounter holiday set, Instant Awakening Trio holiday set, and Counterman. Something for everyone on your list.

Another great thoughtful gift is to have people write down their recipes on matching cards and gift in a cute recipe box. There is something about a handwritten recipe. It makes a great memory and keepsake.

Tell me what is your favorite gift you have ever received and given? Also what is you most treasured gift? They could be the same favorite and treasured but mine are different.

Fabulous Friday, XXIV

76Uxtc0g

I picked Em up on Friday. We played, watched Christmas movies, had fried rice for dinner and went to take pictures with Santa.

Saturday we to a rainy Pepper Place. There were not too many vendors there so we grabbed Em’s favorite chicken minis for breakfast. We played a little before meeting her daddy. I ran some errands then game time. Holy Moly. What a Cinderella story. I don’t care who you are Jalen Hurts, a class act.

IMG_20181202_124612

My Mama came by Sunday, we hit up the Summit. Ran some errands. Picked up my Christmas present. Lilly P accidentally sent the confirmation email to me instead of my mom so I already knew what it was. We made Butter Bear bath bombs at Lush. We also saw our friends at the Birmingham Candy. I got some cotton candy and other goodies.

Monday I helped the lovely Danika Brysha with her virtual Brunch series.

Screenshot_20181204-165950.png

This week also brought new hair color and new nails.

A little work mixed with a little Christmas elving.

IMG_20181203_190843.jpg

I am all ready for Christmas cards. Expect ours to be a little late.

Our little elves are playing in our clothes. They must want to be a Disney unicorn mermaid princess too.

I do not love fake trees but vintage looking tinsel trees I do love.

I want to try this Reindeer food (aka puppy chow/muddy buddies).

I have post all three parts of our Greece trip. Please give them a glance if you have not. Athens, Santorini, and Crete.IMG_20181202_124102

It’s the 25 days of love for #rileykateslovies. If you want to do an act of love in memory of Riley Kate please do no matter how big or small. I can mail you a card if you want.

Happy Friday, Lovies!

I hope you are soaking up the Holiday Season. And if its less than happy thoughts this time of year, I hope you are giving yourself self love, grace and kindness.

The Barefoot Mermaid Travels to Crete

MVIMG_20181006_152756

We traveled to Crete on the final stretch of our journey in Greece. We took a sunset ferry over from Santorini.  If you can time your ferry ride for sunset I highly recommend it. We took the slower ferry time wise aka cheaper. We enjoyed the sunset and then being under the stars. We stayed up on the top deck under the stars. We were practically the only ones up there.

The first night we stayed in Heraklion. Our hotel was not wonderful but it did the job. Mainly if you were not gentle the doors slammed shut, thus creating a lot of noise. The next morning, we had our rentals car delivered to us which was nice.

The first morning we found a bakery and the open air market. I bought some olives, olive oil and a yellow pomegranate.

Our tour guide who we found on Viator met us at the hotel. We walked to the Archaeological Museum. Here we saw artifacts spanning from the Neolithic to Roman Period. Amazing how old some of the things are. The prehistoric inhabitants in Greece were as old to the Romans as the Romans are to us. Mind blowing.

We wondered around the city center for a bit taking in the Venetian influence. I recommend grabbing a snack from the little cafe, Phyllosophies surrounding the Lion Fountain.

We then traveled to Knossos. The crowds were light and the weather was pleasant. Here is the palace of Minoan Crete. What a treasure to learn about the history. The speculate the city extends far beyond the excavations but basically there is not enough money to unearth it all. Which is really sad to me. What if some important treasure about history is hidden still. We stood on the oldest street in possibly the world that went from the palace grounds to the ocean. Our tour guide really helped to reconstruct the palace and bring the history of a pile of rocks to life.

After our tour we continued on to Chania. What a charming seaside town. I loved Crete the mountains and the oceans so close together with green olive trees abounding. We settled into our hotel. Before we grabbed some pastries for dinner.

Our first full day in Chania we grabbed the Crete specialty pastry for breakfast. We walked to the lighthouse and explored the surroundings along the way. We visited two of the oldest olive trees and had lunch in a small town along the way. It was Sunday. It seemed people got out of church then walked by deciding which party to go to. Baby dedications it seemed. But it was literally like they just picked one rather than knowing before hand which party (held at two different restaurants) they would attend. This was all our observations not knowing any Greek language.

The next day we drove to the mountains with no agenda in mind. We saw goats free ranging along the highway and tons of olive trees. The mountains are about as high as the Appalachian mountains here but appear so much larger. Ryan and I speculate it was because her you have some elevation gained before you see the mountains whereas there you can see them while you are standing at sea level in the ocean. We toured an olive oil factory. The production process is amazing. Local farmers bring their olives to be processed. The entire olive pit and all gets pressed. The olive oil sits for a while before its filtered and then stored in larger tanks. The oil from different farmers is never mixed and from year to year it is not mixed. It was a fascinating tour that I highly recommend.

MVIMG_20181009_162120We grabbed dinner. Holy moly the fries there are heavenly! They have this sauce that is pink, reminds me of ketchup and mayo mixed but a bit sweeter than just that. It was so good!!!

The next day we had souvlaki wraps for breakfast. We stumbled upon an indoor market. Here we grabbed a few goodies. Including the best honey I have ever had. We looked around the Nautical Museum. They have a Minoan boat replica that was actually sailed around Greece. We walked along the harbor again towards the lighthouse.

MVIMG_20181009_132208IMG_20181009_132354

And then one of the most magical moments in my life happened, we saw Loggerhead sea turtles in the ocean. Two of them. we watched them bob and swim for almost thirty minutes before turning back to the room. On the other side of the harbor we saw a third one. Pure magic. We grabbed dinner and ate it on the balcony. We also maybe had a snack of fries again during the day.

The next day we returned to Heraklion. We grabbed the same snack from the same cafe. Visited the Koules Fortress which is on the water. It was a Venetian fort that a played a role in the Ottaman’s conquering Crete. We flew to Athens that evening and flew home with a brief layover in Frankfurt the next day. What a beautiful and remarkable trip. Travel often my friends.

Fabulous Friday, XXIII

Time is flying! How is November almost over?!?

IMG_20181124_092015.jpg

This past weekend I grabbed some goodies at Pepper Place Market. We snuggled in at home watching football and the Iron Bowl.

IMG_20181124_215539

We took a late night trip to the movies to see The Nutcracker. It was beautiful and good. We tried out the renovated theater in Vestavia. Recliners with heated seats. We wont pay that money for every movie because we are cheap and wait til most movies come to the dollar theater. But any movies we do see brand new we will see there.

I am gearing up for the 25 days of acts of love or #rileykateslovies in celebration of our sweet baby. If you would like to do an act of love in her honor let me know and I can get a card in the mail to you. Last year we asked everyone that would have bought her a Christmas gift to do an act of love no matter how small in her honor and then tell us so we could experience her light and love in the world. It was such a healing blessing and you can expect us to continue this all of our days.

I blogged about our visit to Santorini in October.

I grabbed this OPI Nutcracker nail polish advent calendar! I can’t wait to countdown with nail polish.

The cold weather and hand washing has my skin so dry. I have this Baby Balm (not just for babies) in my purse at all times now.

You know how much I love a good party, celebrations, and traditions. I bought the Cultivate What Matters Celebration Binder during Black Friday and I can not wait to dive in.

I decked what was left if the halls this week. All the pastels and pinks inspired by vintage Christmas and our sweet baby.

The Barefoot Mermaid Travels to Santorini

IMG_20181004_123229

Santorini really is what postcards are made of. Beautifully pictures. We stayed three nights on this beautiful island. We took it slow and relaxed here.

Arriving in Sanrtorini was a sight. I was not sure there was land underneath us we got so close to the ocean before landing. We grabbed our rental car and headed to explore. We stopped for pastries then to Akrotiri. Since our flight arrived so early we went straight to exploring to beat the heat and crowds. Akrotiri was mind blowing. They are still excavating part of the city. The volcanic ash has preserved everything well, similar to Pompeii. You can even see some wall frescoes in the museums in Athens. One particular interesting fact is they think in 17th century BC the inhabitants new the eruption was happening and left since they have found no human remains and no jewels. So amazing. Maybe there was a series of smaller eruptions, maybe it was the way the wind blew, or the animals acted.

Later we went to find the hotel, White Deck. Oy! What an exhausting endeavor. Google thought pathways were streets and many times we had to back up to let other cars or water trucks through. We were not going the wrong way that is just how traffic works.

MVIMG_20181002_184533

After dropping our bags at the hotel we walked from Imerovigli to Fira. We had Why Not! Souvlaki for lunch and headed back for a nap. Our hotel room was a traditional cave house. It was beautiful and a splurge I am so glad we invested in. Afterwards we explored the area surrounding our hotel. We watched the sunset from our balcony while enjoying some wine and pastries for dinner.

We had breakfast on our balcony every morning. The second day we visited the Monasterio Profeta Elías. It is at the top of one of the mountains. You cant miss it. We took the trail around for a hike and a view. We visited one of the black sand beaches and stopped for lunch. One of my favorite souvlaki places was in Santorini. I can’t tell you the name but it is next door to this grocery store. We headed back for a nap after a day of exploring. We wanted to get to Oia in plenty of time for a good view.

The second night we did watch the sunset from Oia. I was pretty but the crowds. There was not even space to really enjoy the pretty buildings. We went back the next morning to get see some sights throughout the town and it was still crowded.

IMG_20181003_204819

Anogi was possibly the best meal of our trip. It was conveniently located right up from our hotel. The meatballs were amazing. Legit one of the best dishes of my life. That dish right upfront in the picture is shrimp, cheese, and tomato sauce.

The third day we visited Oia to grab some pics and check out the views in the daylight and less crowds. I picked up two books from Atlantis Books. I promise my best travel advise is to leave a little room in your luggage for wine, olive oil and some books. We took a walk on Koloumbos Beach. The cliffs were beautiful.

MVIMG_20181004_185449

Our last night we grabbed crepes, we intended to get something else but we stumbled upon them and not much else in one of the smaller town areas. We had a sunset picnic by the lighthouse. I would recommend this as my favorite sunset place. The sun dips down into the Aegean just like in Oia but without the tens of thousands of other people. There were people at the lighthouse but definitely not as many. We opted to climb the hill behind the lighthouse to get the lighthouse and sunset in our view.

The day we left we went to ancient Thera then realized it was more involved with the hike than we wanted to give. The best 20 euro I have spent paying to have our laundry done. We pack light and do laundry along the way. We visited the Prehistoric museum wondered around town, grabbed a snack before heading to the port. We arrived at the port in plenty of time. It was fascinating to see Santorini from below.

NICU Babies

Dear sweet babies,

Tonight (well a few weeks ago because it’s taken some time to process and not feel as raw) I clocked out of the NICU for the last (for now) time. It was the hardest decision I have ever made in my life. The choice certainly did not come easy but it for very personal reasons it seems to be the right choice. In the past 8 years, I have spent some of my most sacred days with you. I put sweat and tears into caring for you and my fellow coworkers. Sweet babies handing you to your mama for the first time or standing beside your parents as they held you for your very last breath are the most holy moments of my life. I have celebrated every gram gained, every ml of milk you have consumed, every pee, every poop and every home-going with your family. I have savored every cuddle, rock, swaddle and gurgle. I have mourned every set back and every loss. You have challenged me, taught me, changed me, inspired me, and because of you I am a stronger, more loving, more capable person. You have created in my
heart more, love, empathy, understanding, acceptance and treasures. What a joy you have given me.

I feared what saying good bye for the time being would mean for my identity and how I would feel about losing my precious babes but honestly once a NICU nurse always a NICU nurse. I will carry you babies, your families and all my angels with every breath and beat of my heart for the rest of my days.

And here is a reminder dear little ones for life. Sometimes your dream job is no longer your dream and it’s ok to let it go and move on. People change, places change, dreams change. Change is inevitable. Change is scary. Change is hard. But if nothing ever changed we would miss the magic, love and best that change sometimes can preceed. Sometimesit takes letting go of good things to create space for best things. Don’t stop chasing the fire and passion in your heart no matter how many times your dreams evolve. Never let anything or anyone dull the sparkle in your eyes and light in soul.
I carry you with me always.
Lovies.

PS: does my work family know me or what.

Fabulous Friday XXII

Happy Black Friday!

I hope your week has been filled with whatever fills your soul. Whether that’s family, food, friends, shopping, decorating, rest, travel, work, love, peace, and quiet.

It’s been a fast week over here. We prepped for visiting family and friends. I had some wonderful baby snuggly visitors earlier in the week. Ryan’s family came to celebrate Thanksgiving and Memaw’s birthday.

Last weekend we found our Christmas tree. Let Em burn off some energy. The lights went out of the Christmas tree later in the week but luckily it was easily revived by changing out the fuses.

I went to a cake decorating class and made a Thanksgiving flower arrangement. I forgot how much creating beautiful things with my hands grounds me.

We could use some good thoughts, prayers and guidance for upcoming life if you have any to spare.

Im currently reading Dawn of a Distant Shore.

We also ordered our Greece book. Check the Artifact Uprising website for a Black Friday weekend deal!

Ryan bough Oxiclean stain remover to try to get some ink out of my better sweater. I used it on my white tablecloth on soak mode a few times and it did wonders for my stained table cloth.

Are you shopping online, in-store, local or all this weekend?

Happy Weekend! And Roll Tide!

Lovies.

xoxoxo

Fabulous Friday, XXI

Last weekend, Ryan and I cheered on the Tide. I worked for a few hours. I continued to work on making over the new secretary desk. And we pulled out the Christmas decorations since I had gallbladder surgery Monday I won’t be picking up heavy things for a while.

I spent the week relaxing and recovering from surgery. Unfortunately I think I got the Davis anesthesia nausea gene. Ryan took off again Tuesday to stay home with me. I think me crying when he walked into recovery sealed the deal on that.

The rest of the week was spent napping and maybe some slight Christmas decorating.

Our wonderful neighbor brought us poppyseed chicken casserole. I have been eating it and my Edible Arrangements from my in laws all week.

There was a dusting of snow in Alabama on Thursday morning. I’m glad it wasn’t more. I don’t like southern icy snow. I didn’t realize how cold it was going to get so hopefully my plants revive themselves.

I treated myself to a blow out and some curls today. The thought of washing and drying my own hair seemed like a little much with abdominal cuts. Who am I kidding it feels like a little much when I am in perfect health. Im still loving my fairy hair.

Mumford and Sons new album Delta dropped today.

Needtobreathe also released their acoustic album today.

They both have tours coming up in the spring and I was lucky enough to grab both.

I have a to read list a mile long but I’m adding Becoming to it!

I am looking forward to a weekend of Pepper place, football and maybe some Christmas shenanigans.

Happy Weekend, lovies!

xoxoxo

The Barefoot Mermaid Travels to Athens, Greece

Screenshot_20181109-081532.png

We spent our 5th anniversary in Greece. We visited Athens and some trips around the mainland before island hopping to Santorini and Crete. We covered many historical places that my brain literally can not compute the time frame. I’m going to post about the three main places we went and also do a big gallery of pictures.

We spent three nights in Athens at the beginning of our trip. We rented an Athen’s Air B&B with Acropolis views. We then travel to Nafplio in the Peloponnese. Here we stayed one night at Leto Nuevo Hotel. The Peloponnese was beautiful and I wish we had spent more time here. There were citrus and olive trees everywhere as well as views of the surrounding seas.

Our arrival day in Athens, Ryan was not feeling well so we rested a bit before grabbing dinner. Off of Monastiraki Square. We ate at O Thanasis, we thought. There is a row of about four or five restaurants on both sides of the street that all appear to have the same name and food. Another night we returned to try out what we think is the one we meant to go to on the first night. The food was good both nights but definitely better at the second O Thanasis. Walking away from the square its up the road a bit on your left. It has a grey stone like exterior. Ryan’s food was delicious. Another day we grabbed Kosta’s which was delicious but lacking sauce in my opinion. Most days for breakfast we stopped in a bakery. I always got a cheese pie and Ryan typically got some sausage/cheese combination. In the evening we would pop in whatever bakeries we were close to for sweet treats. Be prepared to sit and wait at dinner in Greece. It is not a hurried affair and they are not looking to turn tables over quickly.

The next day we had a tour guide and did all the things. I can not recommend a tour guide enough. We use Viator to book a guide. We have now had one in Rome, Athens and Heraklion. They really are worth the money. Providing expert knowledge, local tips and really can bring a pile of rubble to life. I learned so much like that statues what we think of as white used to be painted. There is actually technology now that scans the statues and can produce an imagine of designed and colors often missing to the naked eye.

We visited the Acropolis Museum, National Archaeological Museum of Greece, and Acropolis. It was a full but educational day. Holy it was amazing. All the history and learning all the things. We were able to mostly dodge the rain from the Medicane. Yes, Mediterranean hurricane…what the what? We also stopped by The Poet Sandalmaker to grab my anniversary present from Ryan, who researched and came up with that idea all on his own.

The next day we took a day trip to Archaeological Site of Delphi. The rain ran the fine line between adventure and misery. But the mist and fog definitely enhanced the mystery of the majestic oracle. We had quite the adventure on the way home when the water on the road began to come over the wheel into the passenger floor board.

The next day we headed to Nafplio. Along the way we stopped at Mycenae and Tiryns. Both sites date back to the 15th century BC. WOW! I literally have a hard time calculating that time frame out in my head. It is amazing what they can learn about these ancient civilizations and there expanded world of commerce and trading.

That evening we wondered around the charming town of Napflio. We grabbed lunch at Gallika Salon de The & French Bakery. It was not Greek but yummy still. We had dinner at a somewhat disappointing fish house.

IMG_20181001_133457.jpg

We visited the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus. Which was an ancient healing center. You know the nurse in me loved that. It was expansive with many buildings and the best preserved theater from that time. We then went to one of my favorite places the Temple of Poseidon. This mermaid girl loved the cliffs overlooking the sea. On the way to stay close to the airport at Apartment Tina, we pulled over to watch a spectacular sunset. The next morning we had an early morning fly to Santorini. Check back next week for our days there!

Fabulous Friday XX

It’s been a week or two really, phew.

Last Thursday night I visited the ER for severe abdominal pain. My gallbladder will be removed soon. I’m so bummed about having surgery and scars. I know I’m a nurse it’s ridiculous for me to feel this way but I do.

IMG_20181103_183938

I ran to Pepper Place Saturday morning and grabbed all the goodies for the LSU game.

Sunday I visited one of my friends in North Alabama for her birthday. We had such a good time catching up and having dinner. Of course the time was too short.

IMG_20181109_080225_000.jpg

We have a sweet new love in our life to snuggle. Thanks to all my friends for all the babies to love.

This week I also met with the group, Dialogue to discuss navigating grief during the holidays. I am so thankful for this group of women. We meet one Wednesday a month. If you are interested in joining us please do not hesitate to reach out.

IMG_20181105_190601.jpg

I started to makeover this beauty and I can’t wait to see it finished.

I’m currently devouring Into the Wilderness such a good book.

I haven’t seen The Nutcracker or Outlander yet. I’m saving those for when I’m resting after surgery.

I also have started doing some Christmas shopping so if you are on my list and have something you want, let me know asap.
